THE NORTH KOREAN CONTRAST

In the case of North Korea, there has been no letup in the deployment of history to support the personality cult of the ruler. In a state totally controlled by the government, there are state historians and approved works, iconography and terms, alongside incessant censorship.18 At the same time, the fall of Communism in Eastern Europe, the Soviet Union and Mongolia acted as an historical lesson about the lack of inevitability in current arrangements. Moreover, Germany offered a more specific instance of the possibility of reunification between capitalists and Communists, a reunification, furthermore, that suggested that North Korea could only have a transient existence as a separate state. Thus, in March 2014, it was in a speech given in Dresden, in the former East Germany, that Park Geun-hye, the president of South Korea, outlined proposals designed to ease the reunification of Korea. History as a cumulative process, one in which the past provides a source of new examples and arguments, is exemplified by this episode.
